James Comer Leads Effort to Expel Ilhan Omar from Congress
During a recent appearance on Benny Johnson’s show, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer declared his intention to lead an effort to expel Rep. Ilhan Omar from Congress. Comer stated that Omar should be compelled to address Congress directly, explaining her identity, age, and any potential involvement in fraudulent activities concerning her family. He emphasized that if Omar is innocent, she should welcome the opportunity to clear her name, suggesting that Congress should grant her ample time to do so.
Comer further stated that if Omar refuses to comply, Congress should initiate a process of censure or, ideally, removal from office. He asserted that the American public deserves transparency regarding her background, particularly given the serious allegations surrounding her citizenship and financial dealings. Omar has faced scrutiny over various claims, including whether she has been truthful about her name, birthdate, and financial disclosures, as well as allegations that she married her brother as part of an immigration scheme.

As reported, Omar is currently under investigation by federal authorities for possible false statements on immigration and naturalization documents. On October 12, agents from Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant at her residence in Washington, D.C., seizing phones, notebooks, and other materials. A federal court filing has referred to her as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar," raising further questions about her identity.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has indicated that there is evidence suggesting Omar may have married her brother to facilitate an immigration scheme, a claim that has been corroborated by White House border czar Tom Homan, who confirmed that ICE is investigating whether she obtained citizenship fraudulently. Omar has denied these allegations, asserting that the investigation is politically motivated.
Democrats Rally Against Investigation Efforts
In a show of solidarity, 175 House Democrats, led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, recently signed a letter urging the Justice Department and DHS to cease their investigation, labeling it as an example of "weaponization" of the federal government. Comer has previously called for the public release of any evidence against Omar, advocating for a vote in Congress to determine her eligibility to serve. He stated, "If you violated the laws to become a citizen, should that make you ineligible to be a member of Congress? I think so. But put it up for a vote in Congress and let the American people see how their member of Congress would vote on that."
The Common Sense Test
The Constitution permits the House to expel a member with a two-thirds vote, and Rep. Randy Fine has indicated that he will introduce an expulsion resolution if the Justice Department determines that Omar committed immigration fraud, emphasizing that a non-citizen cannot serve in Congress. Former President Donald Trump has also weighed in, claiming that Omar used a false name to be sworn in and calling for her immediate removal. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer has remarked that Omar’s "days are numbered" if the allegations are substantiated.
As of now, no formal expulsion resolution has been filed. The ongoing investigation into Omar's background raises significant questions about her fitness to serve in Congress. The situation underscores the importance of accountability among elected officials, particularly regarding the integrity of their claims about citizenship and personal history. The American people deserve clarity and honesty from their representatives, and it is essential that Congress acts decisively in response to these serious allegations.
